This country is broken from the foundation up. Any political party that has stooped to this level has no policies the people would want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Yahoo News; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GOP-controlled Texas Senate on Tuesday passed a proposal allowing the state to overturn elections in Harris County, home to the state\u2019s most populous city Houston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation penalizes county officials for running out of ballot paper at some voting sites in the 2022 election,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230502231219\/https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/politics\/texas\/article\/texas-republicans-seek-overturn-elections-mishaps-18073334.php\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Houston Chronicle reported<\/a>. Still, more importantly, it gives Republican&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/topic\/greg-abbott\">Gov. Greg Abbott<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cprecedent-setting\u201d power to undo election results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The measure would give Abbott\u2019s appointed secretary of state the authority to hold a new election in the county if it runs out of paper at 2% or more of its polling sites for more than an hour, the newspaper noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas Gov. Greg Abbott would have precedent-setting power to reverse elections if the bill passes as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill\u2019s Republican co-author, state Sen. Mayes Middleton, said, \u201cThere is no excuse why we can\u2019t competently run our elections and have adequate ballot paper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Senate Democrats saw the move as simply handing the governor a way to reverse results as Republicans like former President Donald Trump and losing Arizona governor candidate Kari Lake&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/12\/24\/kari-lake-election-lawsuit\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tried to do<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harris County, which once skewed Republican,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestplaces.net\/voting\/county\/texas\/harris\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voted nearly 56% Democratic<\/a>&nbsp;in the last presidential election. Abbott and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/elections\/results\/texas-senate\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost<\/a>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2022\/11\/08\/us\/elections\/results-texas-governor.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">county<\/a>&nbsp;in recent re-election races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou want to vest in a political appointee the ability to make a decision as to whether or not an election should be overturned and reheld?\u201d state Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas) said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harris County Attorney Christian Menefee told the Chron that the bill was \u201cabout targeting the largest county in the state, which is led by people of color.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>County Commissioner Adrian Garcia said it was a form of \u201celection denial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill now goes to the Republican-controlled Texas House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Middleton said the shortage \u201cstopped countless people from voting on election day,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox26houston.com\/news\/texas-senate-approves-bill-allowing-for-new-election-if-ballot-shortages-occur-in-harris-co\" target=\"_blank\">Fox 26 reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230430152626\/https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/politics\/houston\/article\/harris-county-ballot-paper-shortage-investigation-17849980.php\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Chronicle study<\/a>&nbsp;concluded that the paper shortage did not alter the outcome of the elections in Harris County, defying Republican claims of voter suppression in GOP-leaning areas. There was \u201cno evidence voters were systematically disenfranchised,\u201d according to the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abbott had previously said the paper shortage would \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/greg-abbott-considers-new-election-harris-county-texas-ballot-paper-issues-discovered-1778319\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">necessitate new laws<\/a>\u201d directed at Harris County,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/texas-bill-will-give-republican-official-power-overturn-elections-1797955\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Newsweek reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least a dozen Harris County Republican candidates contested the 2022 results,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/elections\/2023\/01\/06\/440649\/republican-harris-county-judge-candidate-contesting-mid-term-election-defeat\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Public Media reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This law is simply blatant cheating.
