{"id":1806,"date":"2023-09-30T17:45:12","date_gmt":"2023-09-30T17:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nulifedaily.com\/?p=1806"},"modified":"2026-01-12T12:46:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T19:46:28","slug":"the-post-pandemic-behavior-problems-of-school-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/proliberation.com\/underthesun\/the-post-pandemic-behavior-problems-of-school-students\/","title":{"rendered":"The Post-Pandemic Behavior Problems of School Students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More reports are coming in from school systems, both public and private, about the bad behavior of students upon returning from the COVID-19 shutdowns. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/3975216-from-bad-to-worse-student-misbehavior-rises-further-since-return-of-in-person-classes\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/education\/3975216-from-bad-to-worse-student-misbehavior-rises-further-since-return-of-in-person-classes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Experts say the culture shock and whiplash from the extended period of remote classes<\/a> are only one of the psychological and academic factors behind the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 200,000 students have lost a parent to COVID-19, and several states reported an increase in youth suicide during the pandemic.&nbsp;Scholastically, the Nation\u2019s Report Card 2022 found students had lost decades of learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is has become so bad that researchers are looking for different ways to discipline students instead of the old punitive discipline and punishment methods. This is a classic example of how society places band-aids on social problems instead of addressing the obvious root of the problem, which is the child\u2019s home life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a child returns to school exhibiting behavioral problems, it is apparent that those problems came from being at home, thus, the student\u2019s problem cannot be solved through the school and any new disciplinary practices, but solved by channeling the problems that came from the home and includes the parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, a study shows that it is \u201cevident in a dramatic increase in classroom disruptions, ranging from student misconduct to acts of disrespect toward teachers and staff to the prohibited use of electronic devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s not as if discipline weren\u2019t a problem pre-pandemic. \u201cThe numbers tell the story,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educationnext.org\/to-fix-students-bad-behavior-stop-punishing-them\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.educationnext.org\/to-fix-students-bad-behavior-stop-punishing-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said student-behavior specialist Ross Greene<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re suspending kids like there\u2019s no tomorrow; we\u2019re giving detentions even more than that. We\u2019re expelling to the tune of 100,000 students a year.\u201d Greene added that corporal punishment is at 100,000 instances a year, restraint or seclusion is close to that, and school arrests tally more than 50,000 a year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, schools are turning to psychologist who suggest new methods of dealing with disciplinary problems by, get this, \u201clooking to end punitive discipline, take the focus off student behavior, and train their staffs to recognize\u2014and avoid\u2014situations likely to cause bad behavior. If something is triggering outbursts from students\u2014simply asking them to sit quietly at their desks or giving them a surprise quiz, for instance\u2014teachers might be better off finding other ways to accomplish what is needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No! Parents need to be called into the situation to give an account of what their child is learning at home. The child\u2019s home life should be investigated as to why the child lacks respect for teachers, other classmates, and the learning experience. This is not the failure of the schools by any means, this is the failure of the parents by far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scanning news headlines reveals many of the problems learned from home such as racism, disrespect toward others, violence, bullying, and drug use. These are not attributes of the school system, but come from the home. And they should not be solved by the school system, but by parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If students are problematic in school and disrupt others from learning, they should be sent home and not returned until they learn respect and how to coexist with others in a civilized manner. Period, full stop. This is a parent problem, not a teacher problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, teachers are quitting because they cannot handle the restrictions placed on them to discipline students, the extra workload of pacifying disruptive children, and the low pay they get for surviving a battle zone.
