Tiktok and other social media is flooded with people who are breaking down in tears about how they are struggling to live and afford the basics. In response, many old schoolers such as the post war generation and baby boomers are striking back telling younger people to stop spending on avocado toast and Starbucks coffee and maybe they can save more.

This ideology is an old fashion one not taking into consideration the change of the times and the dynamics of corporate greed. This “a penny saved is a penny earned,” mentality simply does not work under the pressures of corporate greed today. It is not avocado toast and Starbucks that is keeping people down, it is more like 600-800 car notes, way overpriced rent and extreme child care cost.

But the old, conservative generation do not want to place blame on greedy corporations that fund their political leaders, but rather onto the personal life choices of individuals. Telling them they are lazy, irresponsible, and do not work to work is not working and is simply not true. This is gaslighting at its finest. There are a few reasons the younger generation cannot keep up and are struggling, and it is not because they are irresponsible.

The problem is they have bought into the America Dream blindly. Believing that they can own a home and raise a family on an average income. They are now finding out it was all a lie and it is unattainable even with a college degree, a good job, and low living expenses. Along with home prices being out of reach for the average worker, designer consumer goods and necessities are also too expensive.

Overpriced cars, clothing, electronics and beauty products have been marketed to the younger generation crashing them into debt via credit cards as they try a live a designer lifestyle they see on streaming shows. Below is a list of things that younger people should avoid by rejecting the designer lifestyle instead of sacrificing their avocado toast and Starbucks, which are small tickets items compared to the real income takers.

  1. New Cars – people need to realize that a car is a car to get you from point A to point B and should not be a status symbol to impress others. Personal vanity is used by corporations to keep people broke and to purchase their sleek cars and oversized pickup trucks. A well-maintained used car ($3000 cash) is just as effective in transporting people as an overpriced new car. Other countries are wisely investing in and upgrading their infrastructure to accommodate their population using mass transit, decreasing energy cost and cutting pollution and traffic in half. But the United States have abandoned this concept and promoted individualism instead; clogging highways, charging extremes for car maintenance, and raising the cost of gas.
  2. Clothes and Beauty Products – more and more, expensive brand clothes have become a marketing scheme aimed at every younger generation who thrive on parading personal appearance. Fashion and beauty products saturate the public in ads tailored to capture a market of the paychecks of hard-working people in the form of credit card debt turning the working class into debtors and corporate slaves. Botox, fake hair, nail salons, and slut-wear is making a killing off young women and male enhancement products are exploiting young men. Thrifting for used clothes at thrift stores and consignment shops saves money as well as shopping for other goods needed for basic survival. Bartering markets are popping up all over the Internet in community groups of people who buy and sell used products instead of purchasing new, overpriced and poorly made furniture and appliances.
  3. Eating Out and Fast Foods – this industry is one of the most expensive and deadly of markets. It takes away from the family tradition of eating healthy and gathering together the family for quality time at the dinner table. Not only is restaurant food unhealthy, but the weekly expense can break a family and dig deep into weekly wages. In turn, younger people are suffering illnesses and diseases not heard of 50 years ago, adding to medical cost. Children also, are overweight and contracting sicknesses that could be avoided if they ate healthy homecooked meals. But working mothers face corporate pressure, leaving little time to care for their families. Beans, rice, vegetables, oatmeal and the less extravagant food choices go a long way in remaining affordable and better for the body.
  4. Insurance – health and car insurance are the most sophisticated scams going. People pay monthly premiums based on the possibility of some tragic incident happening in their lives. And when something happens, it faces the chance of being denied as a claim leaving the consumer stuck with a stack of bills and higher monthly premiums. The amount paid to insurance companies over a year’s time could be used for many other expenses or at least paid back by the companies if nothing ever happens. But this would be too much like right. A cheaper car that is paid for and home cooked meals would cut down on monthly insurance rates in both areas.
  5. Child Care – the child care industry has exploded in cost leaving many families with another bill that equal a mortgage, rent payment or car note. What is worse is if the parents have more than one child. Public education also, have cut back on funding for schools which adds to the expenses of parents also in supplies and lunch costs, not to mention the teachers. Corporations market the start of the school year with back-to-school campaigns that dig into family finances all the more. The future of education and child care seems to be headed in the direction of individual ability rather than government support for its population. Nanny services are too expensive also, which have led many families to depend more on other family members for support.
  6. Internet and Phone Bills – the Internet has become a necessity as well as cell-phones and other computer electronics. Corporations are constantly upping the cost year by year of what they call bandwidth or data use, which is nothing more than open air electricity pushed through cables. It is not an earth-producing resource nor a material commodity that can be sold on or at the market. It cost little to nothing to harness this source of energy but corporations have branded it also into just another bill, fooling people into thinking it is a rare resource. People should consolidate their use to one company that sells this product or reduce their use altogether.

The idea is to turn to a more practical lifestyle and resist all temptation of feeding the beast of consumerism. Turn away from the vanity aspect of living and do not buy into corporate greed and marketing. Their end game is to turn hardworking people into debtors and corporate slaves. Too many people are complaining about the high cost of living at the same time spending on products they really do not need.

Politicians are not helping the public but encouraging them to feed the corporate beast when they themselves take bribes from the very corporations that drain the public. Politics and business have merged and created a society of self-centered, impractical consumers who have no clue how to live on the basics or to resist their own personal lusts to vanity. If a person does not respect you for who you are or what you have, but expect some fantasy-made fashion statement, then they are not worthy of your company.
