Reading comprehension is vital in today’s information portal of the Internet, but many people are getting lost and sidetracked in misinformation because they lack reading, research skills and comprehension. Memes have taken over as teaching methods instead of the old fashion chapter readings given to us in school.
People have become mentally lazy and allow the memes to clog their minds with brief quotes, quickie theories, soundbites, and images of celebrities reciting catch phrases, instead of digging deeper into the rest of the story with legitimate research and a desire to learn. Instead, they feed their self-interest.
They follow illegitimate hyperlinks with enticing headlines that lead to Internet publications filled with false information slanted to a certain ideology, opinion or intentional fake news story, called click bait. People have even brushed off legitimate news sources and writers as fake. Science and academic research findings have been placed in doubt by people bombarded with repeated claims of fake news and conspiracy theories.
All it takes to find an answer or the truth to a story is someone to actually do the work and research any topic, combined with commonsense and logical deductions to reach a conclusion that seems more reasonable and logical than a story that is harder to believe. History is there are for all to learn from, documents are online and in books from reputable institutions and past events give weight to the truth.
No one should read a meme and decide it will be their truth; or click on a misleading link or news source that does not tell the whole truth and apply it to their worldview. The harder it gets to decipher truth from misinformation the more a person needs to reach back into more credible recent or historical documentation to find the truth.
The rabbit hole runs deep and many people try to research but are led deeper into delusion unknowingly. These people often need rescuing from conspiracy theories and fake news by someone who has a solid grip on reality. Reality is always the best teacher. Look outside, go to the grocery store, talk to people, and stay away from the Internet for a while, and regroup.
Most importantly, understand what you are reading and do not simply gloss over a brief meme and swallow it down. Apply the information to historical accounts and personal experiences and then consider if you would teach that information to a child. Will it grow that child or will it be harmful to its mental and emotional development, or will it send that child to an abyss of lies and delusions and wrong answers.
For instance, no man can have a baby. Babies are not aborted after birth, that is called infanticide and is considered murder and illegal and there is no law that gives anyone that right. Aliens are not real until they talk to world leaders instead of rural residences only. The earth weather cycle is always changing over long periods of time. There is no such thing as two opposing truths.
Commonsense plays a huge role in determining what is true and what is a lie, but too many people have entertained lies and allowed them to infiltrate their minds convincing them to abandon the truth, reason, and logic. Laziness is the cause, information overload, and a desire to be right leads to overthinking instead of remaining inside reality.
