Social Security and Medicare are benefits that people get after they have worked all their lives and are ready to stop working and do the things they enjoy doing and to rest on vacations. It works like this: People start working when they are young at 16 or so, and they get a pay check at the end of the week or two weeks.
Government taxes are taken out of their checks that help pay for things the government needs for the country, such as military soldiers, highway and bridge repairs, parks and enough money to pay the people who work there also. Then state taxes come out that help pay for roads in the state, police and fire services, and clean water that your family drinks.
Next, FICA taxes are taken out and put together with other people who have worked all their lives. Like a crayon fund at school or coffee funds at work, where people put in different amounts of money so everyone can have crayons or coffee each day. These FICA taxes are used to give a small amount of money every month to people after they get too old to work and for Medical treatment in case they get sick in their older age.
But look out! Republican politicians say that they want to take away the Social Security money and medical treatment money from the people who have contributed to it all their lives. They say that this money is an entitlement and that the government GIVES this money and medical treatment to people for free out of the government bank account. But how can this be true if they take the money from your grandmother and father in the FICA taxes from their check? This money rightfully belongs to the people who worked all their lives.
Social Security money is used by grandmothers and fathers so they can buy their little grandchildren toys and clothes and take them places to have fun. But Republicans would rather take the money and keep it for themselves so they can give it to their friends to help them make more money. But what about your grandmother and father? How will they live if they have no money and cannot work?
Please do not let the Republicans take away your grandparent’s money because you will not get anything for Christmas or for your birthday and your grandparents may get sick and die. Tell the Republicans to stop telling lies and leave your grandparents money alone.
Sometimes you have to explain things to people like they are 5-years-old, and 5-year-olds usually pick up right away because their minds are young and impressionable; they soak up knowledge like little sponges. But when talking to grown folks who have a hard time understanding the most basic of concepts, it can be like pulling teeth.
Republican politicians keep saying that the country has to get rid of Social Security and Medicare because it costs too much for the government to maintain. They also attribute that reasoning to social programs like Medicaid, food stamps, and other types of government funded programs that help the poor and struggling. But here’s the thing, Social Security and Medicare ARE NOT government funded.
