First, condolences to the family of Laken Riley, who was killed during her morning run. Authorities have concluded the suspect, a Venezuelan man, was “identified as Athens resident Jose Antonio Ibarra, was taken into custody…, police said.”

Laken Riley was a 22-year-old nursing student out on her morning run at the University of Georgia when authorities say a stranger dragged her into a secluded area and killed her, sending shockwaves through campus as police searched for a suspect.

The arrest of a Venezuelan man who entered the U.S. illegally and was allowed to stay to pursue his immigration case put the tragedy at the center of the 2024 presidential campaign.”

Now the issue has turned to the immigration debate and Democrats being blamed for the killing because of Biden’s open border policies. Of course, the media and Republicans will use this woman’s death as ammunition to tip the scale of the election toward Trump, who was the first to blame America’s crime problems on immigrants, regardless of how disgustingly, politically exploitive it is of a human life.

“On his social media site, Trump on Monday posted, “Crooked Joe Biden’s Border INVASION is destroying our country and killing our citizens! The horrible murder of 22-year-old Laken Riley at the University of Georgia should have NEVER happened!”

The obvious question behind his statement or any statement that pinpoints a minority for the reason of anyone’s death is, what about the other murders and crimes committed by American’s themselves? When will politicians handle domestic crimes which include authorities such as police killing people; domestic violence in which husbands, wives, school children and mass murderers who also kill?

“Many studies have found immigrants are less drawn to violent crime than native-born citizens. One published by the National Academy of Sciences, based on Texas Department of Public Safety data from 2012 to 2018, reported native-born U.S. residents were more than twice as likely to be arrested for violent crimes than people in the country illegally.”

“Whereas Democrats are increasingly more positive when talking about immigrants and pointing to their contributions to the U.S., Republicans remain negative and increasingly focus on crime and legality issues when they talk about immigrants,” said Ran Abramitzky, a Stanford University economics professor who has studied links between immigration and crime, referring to analyses of congressional statements going back decades.”

Unfortunately, facts and statistics does not matter when people thrive on finger pointing and to prove the other side wrong on any given issue. The problem with this whole scenario is that when white women are killed, get lost, or are accosted the slightest, white mobs form and most likely a person of color will suffer. There have been historical accounts of entire communities bearing the brunt and wrath of white mobs based on accusations of white women alone, such as Tulsa OK and Rosewood Fl.

Of course, life is valuable and no one wants to hear their child has been senselessly murdered, this is tragic, but if life is the issue, then other lives should be treated the same as the lives of white women. But we do not live in a country that places much value on brown lives, or any lives, over the lives of white women.

It is exhausting, repeatedly having to watch 48 hours of cable news coverage for the missing case of or murder of a white woman by a minority. This may sound insensitive, but the insensitivity of hundreds of years of the lives of other people being trampled and ignored is getting old.
