To justify using military force and violence against nonwhites, too many racists and authoritarian followers have ignorantly narrowed the immigration issue down to a simplistic logic that if a person is not here in the US legally, they should be treated like criminals and animals. In essence, that the US has laws that must be complied with or else they will be severely punished for breaking the law.

The problem is those who are being rounded up are not actually criminals and are being harshly sentenced; sent to concentration camps where they are caged and treated like animals, and into foreign prisons and countries they are not native to; where they are treated as only God knows how. The punishment does not fit the so-called crime.

By definition, it is a civil violation or a misdemeanor being in the US illegally. Overstaying a visa for instance is a civil violation. The first offense of illegal entry is a misdemeanor under 8 U.S.C. § 1325(a), punishable by up to 6 months in jail, fines and deportation. Illegal reentry is considered a felony under 8 U.S.C. § 1326.

The process of immigration has laws that help people come here to work or study and to become legal citizens, but US immigration courts are backed up and it could take years to complete the process. This is not the fault of someone who is here on a work or school visa. If the courts are overwhelmed, the process should be streamlined so it works better.

Unfortunately, ICE and the current administration has blown off the legalities and humanity of the law and pushed to deport anyone, regardless of legal status, and have begun treating them all as criminals, invaders, and even terrorist. When immigrants and the public protest seeking justice and to bring this to the attention of the administration, they are treated as rioters and fought using military force. This is egregious and legal overkill.

The problem of immigration should be handled professionally as it has in the past under other presidents, not bringing a public spectacle using violence and force. The current spectacle is nothing more than racism fueled by white supremacy and hate. It is ethnic cleansing enforced by some guys who have deep-seated hatred for nonwhites and who desire a white supremacist society.

Even though corporations and many individuals use immigrants to work their farms, businesses, and homes, they are biting off their own noses despite their face by deporting people who are working for them and not committing crimes. The irony is astounding. But instead of seeing the problem for what it truly is – a simple judicial fix – many white folks have resorted to hate, racial slurs, and conscious ignorance of the law.
