Old white men in Tennessee overstepped the will of the people in the state because they want to uphold Jim Crow style legislation and place hundreds of thousands of minority communities at risk.
Though the people have put forth initiatives on the ballot that would curve unlimited gun rights, these men want otherwise and initiated an authoritarian ultimatum to withhold funds from an entire city.
“Tennessee’s top Republican leaders on Monday threatened to withhold tens of millions of dollars in state funding from left-leaning Memphis should leaders continue with plans to place three local gun control initiatives on the November ballot.
Earlier this year, Memphis’ city council approved asking voters in November if they wanted to tweak the city charter to require permits to carry a handgun, ban the possession of AR-15 style rifles and implement a so-called “red flag” ordinance, which allows law enforcement officials to remove firearms from those found to be an imminent danger to themselves or others.”
Apparently, the state lawmakers have no consideration for any municipalities in the state except those who favor their gun rights and desire to enforce Jim Crow laws. We know who those people are. Instead of making sure crime is decreased in major cities, they would allow gun use to run rampant with hopes of people getting killed and imprisoned, even after multiple mass shootings in the state.
“In 2021, the Republican lawmakers and GOP Gov. Bill Lee signed off on permitless carry for handguns and then in May of this year banned local cities and counties from implementing their own red flag laws. Meanwhile, many inside that same Republican supermajority have rebuffed calls to place limits on firearms, an effort that has only increased after a gunman shot and killed three adults and three 9-year-olds in a Nashville private school last year.”
On top of the arrogance and misuse of power, they have the nerve to threaten the citizens telling them they have no recourse or right to challenge the statehouse regardless of what the people want. This is not governing the people under Democracy; it is forcing the public under authoritarian rule.
Who is allowing them to enforce laws and policies that the majority of the people do not want? Why has government failed in moving forward with the democratic process and instead allowing these men to govern with an iron fist?
Furthermore, not only have they pushed insensible gun legislation, but they are allowing the police to also rule with an iron first over the residences of certain cities in TN. “Republican lawmakers and the governor signed off on legislation designed to undo police traffic stop reforms set in place after the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols by officers last year. The Legislature remained steadfast that it would overturn an ordinance adopted by the Memphis city council, which included outlawing so-called pretextual traffic stops for minor violations like a broken taillight, despite emotional pleas to abandon the measure from Nichols’ family.”
If Project 2025 is the goal, look to TN to see how it will take effect over the entire country. No more Democracy or observing the will of the people. Authoritarians encourage gun violence, murder and higher crime based on the ignorance of race and power.
Because of the lawmaker’s indifference toward life and Democracy, they have encouraged Nazi hate groups who march through Nashville beginning division and hate speech to otherwise calm communities. Tennessee is now the poster child for hate, gun violence, and open racism.
