If anyone over the age of sixty suggest to younger generations to “pull yourself up by your bootstraps,” call them lazy or to stop complaining about life and work hard for success, Gen-X, Millennials, and Gen-Z would be completely justified in telling them to go to hell.
If they claim they did it, so can you, they would not be lying, but they would not be telling you the whole truth. Yes, they had bootstraps and they succeeded in life as they sit on their $3000 sectionals watching their 75 inch screen televisions after one of their European trips is complete. The problem is the same bootstraps they had are not available to any other generation alive today.
Back then, there was no crushing debt. Boomers did not have to worry about student loans because colleges were basically free or of little cost. There were government Pell grants to cover the cost of school and there was no worry to pay them back. Rarely did anyone need a student loan. Colleges were public and government run not like today, where they are private investments and cash cows for those same business intuitive Boomers.
There were no medical bills hovering over a person’s life like buzzards waiting for their next check. Hospitals were private run and charitable and health insurance cost as little as $35 a month, not $250 a week like today. And both, student loans and medical bills could be dismissed in bankruptcy, if need be, unlike today.
Boomers had home loans through Freddie Mac and Sally Mae, another government backed institution that were not out to crush a family’s dream of owning a home. But they too, were demolished by capitalist boomer politicians seeking to profit from the labors of their children and grandchildren. Now Wall Street is your landlord.
Oh, and there were no interest rate increases to the tune of 100% on homes, cars, and anything else a person needed to survive in life. There were no credit card debt or credit scores until 1989, when the boomers decided to categorize people’s lives and worth by their monetary value.
Then, after they drained the public and private workforce of wages making $25 an hour, (back in their day mind you), they shipped those same jobs overseas to China, India, and down to Mexico. Now they pay you through temp agencies who get that extra buck for putting you to work.
The food was better, everyone was thinner and healthier because the agricultural institutions were not out for profit backed by the pharmaceutical industry waiting to follow-up with drugs to the drugs boomer parents gave to their children in elementary and middle school, such as Ritalin, Adderall and the rest. Which is why so many people today suffer from obesity, psychosomatic, schizophrenic, and bipolarized diseases.
And no, Gen-Xers and Millennials are not paranoid. Boomers had their favorite kids. They are your managers, business owners and supervisors today. They were coddled by parents and sent to college, literally given the generational wealthy, and had many favors called-in on their behalf. Neither did they have to work too hard for their success.
Boomers had no debt and no worries and all the money has gone to them. They now live off a residual income owed to them by their own kids. They are a selfish, self-centered generation of greedy plunderers who have pillaged their children and grandchildren and are now working on their great grandchildren, Gen-Z, who definitely have no boots, bootstraps, or a ground to stand on.
