Bringing God into American politics was a big mistake. Legislating social order is one thing, but legislating morality is another. No one can be forced to be a good person, either by reading the Ten Commandments or praying in classrooms and court houses. Legislating morality was the purpose of the Old Testament Law, and it failed.
The Law, given by Moses to the children of Israel, was amended by faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, today’s religious leaders are unaware of the change, nor do they understand how the transition took place. They think enforcing the Old Testament is doing God’s will for society. They are wrong.
Goodness and godliness are spread by example and lifestyle, and if lawmakers do not obey laws themselves, then how can they expect the public to obey the same laws. This leaves inequality in the justice system. Moreover, morality is learned from the home and parenting, not from government law and policy, which demands obedience.
No longer is anyone required to practice the Laws of the Old Testament by their own will, (with written ordinances, blood sacrifices, an eye for an eye, and physical might), but through faith and belief in grace. The laws are now written in our hearts and in our minds so we can fulfill the law by the faith of Jesus Christ.
“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel. After those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, And write them in their hearts: And I will be to them a God, And they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, And every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: For all shall know me, From the least to the greatest.” Hebrews 8:10, 11.
Writing laws and ordinances to get people to do what is right will not make anyone a better person. Everyone has free will and will do and live how they want to regardless of the laws on the books. This is how the people lived under the law of Moses and still live today. The difference is people today have an advantage over those under the law. The laws of God are implanted in our hearts and minds by the Spirit of God so we cannot sin against the law.
“Because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Romans 5:5. “Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” Romans 13:10.
Criminalizing transgressions of the law by imprisonment and death does not fulfill the laws of God, it simply makes people aware they are committing sins. “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” Romans 3:20. People must want to change on their own by being led by the Holy Spirit. They have to change on the inside and not be forced to change from the outside.
Today’s religious leaders who are imposing laws on American society using the Bible missed the whole point of the transition from the Old to the New Testaments. Lawmakers have to become an example of righteous living if they seek to change the behavior of everyone else. This leaves too much room for hypocritical lawmakers to commit sins themselves yet punish those who commit the same sins but have no power to defend themselves. Power over others become the objective.
Change in a person comes from the heart, therefore the change in the nation comes from many people with good hearts and the knowledge and love of God. Iron fist rule forced unto people through Old Testament law and political policy will never work because it failed from the beginning, which is why the world has Jesus Christ now. “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” John 1:17.
