Two news stories headlined this year show society’s blaring lack of humanity. One comes from overseas in the Israel/Humas war, and the other comes from right here in the USA, where human beings from other countries are treated as political pawns and tokens of vengeance.
Both show a lack of concern for humans and both stem from one mindset that is gaining steam among one certain group of people. Those people proudly profess to believe in a god that takes vengeance on his enemies and relentlessly grinds them into the ground. Where they get this image and characteristic of this god is beyond reason, but this god is merciless.
As of this year, the “Death toll in Gaza rises to nearly 23,000 amid Israel’s war on Hamas,” and “At the direction of Texas’ Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, the Lone Star state has bused over 90,000 migrants to “sanctuary cities” run by Democrats like Washington, DC, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver and Los Angeles since April 2022, according to numbers released by the governor’s office Friday.”
The Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson reported that immigrants were arriving in the suburbs without proper winter wear and only dressed in t-shirts and sandals, despite it being well into the low 20s amid winter snow.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, mostly innocent women and children have been killed and many hospitals and civilian occupied neighborhoods have been decimated by Israeli bombs. People and nations around the world including the UN and WHO have been calling for a cease fire by Israeli but to no avail. Israeli PM Netanyahu has vowed to continue to war effort until he has defeated all enemies.
The initial attack on Israel came Oct. 7 when “695 Israeli civilians, including 36 children, as well as 373 security forces and 71 foreigners, giving a total of 1,139,” were murdered by Hamas attackers. Nonetheless, 26,000 deaths is apparently not enough to avenge the 1300 deaths.
The problem with both stories is that there are a group of people who support both responses to problems the world faces with acts of revenge accompanied by no mercy. The immigrants coming to the US is a problem but is met with grievance and condescension toward other humans who have found themselves in situations beyond their control.
The other issue is one that does require retribution for the initial murders of the 1139 Israelis, but not to the extent of massacring tens of thousands of innocent people. Retribution requires tact and wisdom, not a headstrong bulrush into a violent tantrum. Neither does immigrants crossing a border call for the irresponsible scattering of families as a way to own the opposing political party.
The bond between the two groups is one that believes God calls for this kind of treatment of people who violate His laws. The eye for an eye form of vengeance lay heavy on the hearts and in the minds of people who worship the God of vengeance from the Old Testament. This God is why many people are afraid of the bible and religions that believe in the god of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.
Both groups profess to being religious and god-fearing, yet neither group truly believes in the Son of the God of the Old Testament, which is Jesus Christ. The Israelis crucified Christ and the people who stand behind those who exploit immigrants ignore the teachings of Christ to love Thy neighbor, on purpose it seems.
However, that same God says, “For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.” James 2:13. When a person knows how to show mercy, they are glad to be judged by God, or anyone for that matter, because they know they will need mercy in the day they are judged.
For those who have no faith in a god or The God, they have no reason to show mercy to anyone else living. To them, there are no repercussions toward them nor retribution, and they see no need to repent of sin because they believe they have committed no sin or wrongdoing, regardless of how cruel they are toward other humans.
