Many times, conservatives remind Blacks that it was the Republicans who freed the slaves and the Democrats were always against emancipation. This strategy is used to taint the Democratic Party and meant to give credibility to the Republican Party for being more sympathetic to Blacks and their plight. But to Black Americans, it really does not matter.

It does not matter because they are both white. It could have been the other way around and it still would not matter to Blacks or sway them one way or another. Racism has always been the enemy of the descendants of African Slaves. So, whoever are the most racist toward Blacks is who Blacks will see as the enemy.

After US independence from Britain, slavery remained a national institution. During the era of the First Party System, both the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans had supporters who were slaveholders, though the parties held different regional strengths.

The modern Democratic Party was the dominant political force in the South for decades before the Civil War, advocating for the expansion of slavery. The Republican Party was founded in the 1850s specifically on an anti-slavery expansion platform, culminating in the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860.

The shift in political values between the two major U.S. parties during and after the segregation era is generally attributed to a realignment driven by civil rights legislation. The Democratic Party, which historically had a strong Southern base that defended segregation, underwent a significant transformation as national leadership embraced civil rights. This eventually led to the Republican Party appealing to many of those white Southern voters.

The key here is “slavery remained a national institution after US independence.” Republicans today can argue all they want about who freed the slaves and who fought against that freedom, but Blacks will only see and remember that both political parties are white people. These same white people could switch political ideologies again today and whichever side the racist are on, Blacks will view them as the enemy. Hope this helps.
