Under the claim of self-defense, men in today’s society have taken a stance on the right to defend themselves against violent attacks from an aggressor. Despite all the international peacekeepers and ambassadors to appease conflicts among nations; the years of educational institutions psychological lessons of thwarting war, down to the strategies used to stop bullying and gang violence, one would think man would have discovered an alternative to an eye for an eye mentality.

One obvious solution to decreasing violence against others is to find out why the aggressors are prone to violence in the first place. Is it anger? Jealousy? A psycho-pathological brain imbalance or mental health issues? Why do people resort to violence against another. There must be a reason for their aggression. The solution is to find out why and deal with that problem first.

Yet instead of researching and answering this question, men automatically resort to retaliation against the aggressor with more violence, all in the name of self-defense. In a cycle that continues with the force of violence, the problem will never be solved.

Money, power, resources and territory are all common reasons men enact violence against others. This fact is known through the existence of rivalry violence between something as socially menial as street gangs.

Yet, ex-gang members who have rehabilitated have come to the conclusion that their past consisted of violence resulting in deaths of friends and family members all over something as trivial as a piece of land; a street corner or a block or two. Bullies are dealt with using psychological strategies that reform the bully instead of violently retaliating against them. Yet men and leaders of nations continue to resort to violence as a resolution to conflict.

In the latest world headlines, Israel was attacked by Palestinian militant forces Hamas and Israel’s first reaction was to retaliate: “The Israeli Defense Forces issued a “state of war” alert just after midnight Saturday local time in response to a “massive” round of rocket fire into Israeli territory from Gaza.”

The Israel Defense Forces said “we will defend ourselves…In response, the military launched “Operation Swords of Iron,” which it described as a “large-scale operation to defend Israeli civilians against the combined attack launched against Israel by Hamas this morning.”

Not once is it recorded in the report that Israel or any other nation sought to remedy the coming war with an attempt at peace talks or negotiations, or to find out why Hamas attacked Israel, what their demands were or simply why have they resorted to violence in the first place. They immediately went to defense mode.

Nations around the world were in lock-step with Israel where it pertained to violent retaliation instead of negotiations. “A White House spokesperson issued a statement Saturday “unequivocally condemning” what she called “the unprovoked attacks by Hamas terrorists against Israeli civilians. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a statement that he is “closely monitoring developments in Israel. “Our commitment to Israel’s right to defend itself remains unwavering,… Austin added that U.S. military forces “will work to ensure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself and protect civilians from indiscriminate violence and terrorism. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement. “Israel has an absolute right to defend itself.”

World leaders have the same mentality as the Israeli leader which is immediate retaliation using violence and an eye for an eye. Civility has not evolved in humanity, but has remained stagnant in the primitive world of violence and war.

Is there another side to the story? Yes. “The governments of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iran appeared to back Hamas in its escalating conflict with Israel. While leaders in the U.S. and Europe quickly denounced the attack and gave support for Israel, the three Middle Eastern nations criticized the country over its treatment of Palestinians.”

Citizens of the United States have also left off peace and negotiations and stand firm on self-defense as justification to kill another human-being in retaliation. Their sad attempts at blaming mental health problems on aggressors or excuses of drug abuse, road rage or trespassing on private property are ineffective in reducing violence in the country so they have lazily resorted to self-defense, open carry, good guys with guns and “stand your ground laws.”

If violence is the only answer to violence, then violence will only increase as shown through numerous headlines across the country and world. And then people turn and blame God and religion for wars and suffering when it is clearly the unevolved nature of man and his military solutions to world peace.
