There simply are no words for the blaring hypocrisy of this spectacle of a so-called re-dedication of this country to the Bible. Hopefully, some good will come of this and many people will reevaluate their own hearts to truly make this a better, more godly country.
“Americans from across the country are gathering to read the Bible out loud, all the way through, broadcasted for all to hear. Some 500 volunteers, including leaders from nearly every sector of American life, celebrities, and everyday Americans, will read the Scriptures over the course of the week.”
Regardless of how many people participate in this bible reading, how many scriptures they read and how long it takes, unless they practice what is written, it will all be in vain. “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: all therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” Matthew 23:2,3.
The religious leaders in Jesus’ time read to their congregations almost daily yet many people ignored the words and still committed sins daily. They heard the words being read, but they did not apply them to their hearts, minds or lifestyle. Jesus called them out for it and warned them to change, but they never did.
The organizer of the “America Reads the Bible,” week, has designated a special passage for the president to read, which they consider to be most important for the nation to hear.
“President Trump will be reading 2 Chronicles 7:11-22 from the Oval Office, Tuesday evening. Organizers said the passage was picked specially for the President because of its decades-long role as a call to prayer in America. Bonni Pounds said the passage, particularly verse 14, has been central to American prayer life for decades, often invoked during times of national reflection.”
“2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
If they would simply listen to the words being read this whole thing would be worthwhile, but as the Pharisees did, they read the words but the people ignore the instructions. “If they would turn from their wicked ways”, is the most important part of this scripture. They want the forgiveness and healing, but refuse to acknowledge the part about turning from their sins.
The most egregious part, is the message from the president (which was apparently written by someone else):
“’This week, I send my best wishes to every citizen gathered at the Museum of the Bible, on the National Mall, and all across our country participating in America Reads the Bible, a historic initiative in which nearly 500 Americans will take part in a public reading, over the course of one week, of the entire Bible—from Genesis to Revelation—to celebrate 250 years of the Bible in America.
From Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the New World and the first permanent English-speaking settlement at Jamestown to our founding in 1776 and to the present day, the Bible has been indelibly woven into our national identity and way of life. Nearly 400 years ago, a decade after the arrival of the Mayflower, the legendary John Winthrop powerfully invoked Jesus Christ’s Sermon on the Mount as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew: “We must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us,” Winthrop said, imploring his fellow Christian settlers to stand as a beacon of faith for all the world to see.”
The words of John Winthrop were published (if they were published at all), at the beginning of the genocide of an entire nation of indigenous peoples, the enslavement and brutal treatment of stolen peoples from another continent, and every act of inequality and injustice committed on many millions of people, men, women, and children within this country and around the world; all under the guise of white supremacy and the false organized religion of Christianity.
The rest of the message, supposedly written by the president, is as hypocritical as the beginning. It is full of lies about the founding of this country, made-up quotes, and blasphemous claims that completely contradict the true nature of Jesus Christ and the gospel of Christianity.
If this country wants to truly heal, they must confess and repent for their sins against others, particularly people of color. If they do not, all this is for nothing but show.
