It is amazing that supposedly educated people, engulfed in world knowledge, cannot make the connection between human nature and guns. Sadly, a biblical proverb rings true in the thinking of many gun enthusiasts in the US that says, “A fool hath no delight in understanding…” Proverbs 18:2.

From second amendment advocates and NRA-bought politicians, this mindset has caused millions of people to die at the hands of a mental ill-stubbornness called cognitive dissonance, which means being aware of conflicting views and/or desires but not knowing what to do with them, or a mental conflict that occurs when your beliefs don’t line up with your actions.

For example, take the words of the new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) when speaking about the latest mass shooting in Maine. He says, “the problem is the human heart — it’s not guns.” He, and people of his persuasion, cannot quite comprehend that people use guns as a reflection of who they are and what they are feeling, which brings to life the gun itself. Like a pencil. It is a tool used to express what a person believes or feels.

Behind the logic of people who claim that there is no connection between a gun and the people who have them, is a refusal to take responsibility for the damage guns do in society in the hands of one or many persons. Another remarkable example of this thinking comes from the US National Security Advisor who said, “The United States of America when we transfer weapons to another country, whether it’s Israel or anyone else, requests, requires an assurance that those weapons will be used in accordance with the law of armed conflict, and we seek accountability to ensure that that is the case, we will continue to do that,” National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said.

This thinking says, “here is a gun, we trust that you will not use it outside the legal ramifications of its original purpose.” However, this thinking totally disregards the essence of human nature. This ignored aspect of human nature is that though there are people who would abide by this rule, there are also those who will not. It is called good and evil. Unless there is a law that changes the human heart, controlling guns is obviously the next logical solution to lessening the violence.

The irresponsibility and lack of common sense has become a wall of escape to those who willfully choose ignorance in a shameful attempt to uphold a dumb ideal. Another perfect example of this cognitive dissonance is Florida Governor DeSantis’ response to the Maine shooting while being interviewed on Meet the Press.

When trying to condemn – and at the same time justify – the mixed message of Maine’s “yellow flag,” gun law, which “was created a little more than four years ago in Maine that tried to align with Maine’s pro-Second Amendment mindset while still taking a step toward stronger gun safety measures,” is the perfect example of cognitive dissonance and not being able to choose between two conflicting viewpoints.

“DeSantis said he is against the idea that government can go to someone’s property and go through due process later on after seizing weapons. Noting he believes in “strong constitutional rights,” DeSantis said such rights come with responsibility, “and if you’re somebody that … can’t conduct themselves in society because of mental illness, then that should absolutely be taken into account.”

Which means, in essence, I do not understand the connection between people having guns and the deaths happening in the world today, and I refuse to acknowledge there is even a problem because I am disconnected from reality and the concept of human nature.

People of this intellectual caliper will never relent in their quest to uphold a concept that is literally destroying human lives. Even though they claim to champion the right to life and the biblical principles of life and liberty, they are caught in a cloud of evil that has ascended from the depths of hell.
