Every time there is a mass shooting, politicians claim the shooter must have a mental health problem. Policies are proposed to fund mental health but apparently the funds are not helping because no one is getting cured if mass shootings continue to happen.

This is just a talking point among law makers because they cannot admit that guns are the problem, not mental health. But let us look at the roots of mental health and see if it can be solved with more funding. According to professionals, “some examples of these factors include:

• Genetic factors — having a close family member with a mental illness can increase the chance that you might get a mental illness. However, just because one family member has a mental illness doesn’t mean that others will.

• Drug and alcohol abuse — illicit drug use can trigger a manic episode (bipolar disorder) or an episode of psychosis. Drugs such as cocaine, marijuana and amphetamines can cause paranoia.

• Other biological factors — some medical conditions or hormonal changes can cause mental health problems.

• Early life environment — negative childhood experiences can increase the risk of some mental illnesses. Examples of negative childhood experiences are abuse or neglect.”

• Trauma and stress — in adulthood, traumatic life events or ongoing stress can increase the risk of mental illness. Issues such as social isolation, domestic violence, relationship breakdown, financial or work problems can impact on mental health. Traumatic experiences such as living in a war zone can increase the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

• Personality factors — some traits such as perfectionism or low self-esteem can increase the risk of depression or anxiety.

So how is money used to solve these problems? Medication. These are societal problems that can happen to anyone and not just mass shooters. In fact, there are hundreds of thousands of people who suffer these type mental health problems every day but do not commit mass shootings.

So, if a mass shooter is suffering from one of these triggers, how can society catch any one person out of 360 million people? They cannot. The associated factor in mass shootings is not mental health, it is the gun used. In many news updates on mass shootings, they never mention if that person even suffered from one of the above triggers.

It is all lies and no law maker is actually going to solve this problem through funding. This is an issue that needs a healthcare solution, such as expanded universal healthcare. The claim “mental health” literally has the word health in it; politicians refuse to admit that also. Health insurers, pharmaceuticals, and the gun industry play the main roles in mass shootings and mental health. Yet politicians would rather blame the victim and wave goodbye than face the truth.

As the country moves forward, mass shootings will continue because the stressors in the country are rising. People are losing a grip on the persistent burdens they encounter simply trying to cope each day. If money can solve the problem, it should be directed to the benefit of the family unit so they can reduce the stresses of life, and not to corporations who cause and maintain the problem.
